Garden Fancy: Garden Timeline 2015

After the huge expansion of garden areas in previous years, In 2015 I reduced two garden areas: 1) the number of my Cutting Garden beds; and 2) the size of the Peony/Rose Bed

In early spring 2015, we repainted our white picket fence for the first time since 2012 (it was installed in 2011, but we let it dry out until the following spring to paint it the first time).

The freshly painted fence made a good backdrop for the front border flowers.

The Cutting Garden

I downsized my cutting garden to these four beds, from eight the previous year.

Here are the cutting garden beds later in summer.

The cutting gardens yielded many beautiful flowers.

The area on the right was put back to grass, and and I moved my roses (many of which had died in the very cold winter of 2013-2014) to the narrow strip to the right of the peonies. Those that survived the next few years were eventually moved to my new Paradise Garden in 2018., but I'm afraid all the moving around resulted in me losing track of the names of some of them.

Reduced and Redesigned North Island

I also redesigned the North Island in 2015, as shown in this photo taken a couple of years later. I removed most of the acid-loving plants that I was trying to grow (by adding acidifiers to my limey soil) and started planting Itoh, intersectional, and tree peonies. Because these are expensive, I started with six of them in 2015, and occasionally added another one or two. In 2023, I moved the peonies to my west terrace when I redesigned that area, and seeded the back half of this area back to lawn.

These tulips made a fine displace in late April 2015

Although by early May, some other tulips in several spots suffered a strange droopiness. I could not discover what caused this and it has never since occurred. Very odd.

The delphiniums looked magnificent again that year

By 2015, I had discovered the beauty of snapdragons, which seem to do well in our limey soil and reseed themselves.

I repainted my front door a pretty blue. I think we must have had our house repainted the previous year too.

The Herb Garden flourished that year, and the boxwood hedges had completely grown in and looked great after their annual spring trim.

The corner of the front porch and the addition looked nice that year.

The North Border looked pretty good in summer, but it was a lot of work to keep it weeded. I redesigned this border at the end of this summer and the following year.

The dianthus I grew from seed flowered beautifully in the Pond Gardens in 2015. the scent could be smelled from a distance--it was wonderful.

We did have to shore up the edges of the pond in that area this year, by installing treated 6x6" wood posts along the edges. This provided better support for the paving stones, one of which had fallen into the pond after heavy rains.
